Cizynski Leading Pomperaug

Pomperaug has not only towered above the opposition on the scoreboard, but also on the floor.

The Panthers have four 6-footers, highlighted by Fairfield University-bound Katie Cizynski.

Cizynski is averaging 21 points and 12.6 rebounds and broke the school’s scoring record, boys and girls, of 1,377 points, previously held by Dave Grant since 1980.

“She’s an incredible player,” Panthers coach Jennifer Jackson said of the 6-foot-2 Cizynski. “Once she decided she was going to Fairfield, she’s stepped up a notch. She’s gotten stronger and more well-rounded. She’s made great strides.”

Cizynski seems to be one of the few legitimate post players in the state. With plenty of size, led by Cizynski, and a strong backcourt in Kasey Dean (headed to college at Brandeis) and Nicole Welton (headed to Dominican), the Panthers will be among the favorites to win a loaded Class L state tournament.

Cizynski and the Panthers look to win their 11th straight game tonight when Pomperaug hosts Brookfield at 7 p.m.
