Lauralton Hall looks like team to beat in SWC - and maybe in Class LL too

Lauralton Hall beat Newtown 63-48 Tuesday night. In case you missed it, here's the game story and video highlights are below.

The Crusaders looked very impressive. They are strong at every position on the floor and have a solid bench as well. Lauralton Hall is now 11-1 and its only loss came on a buzzer-beater to Hillhouse in the second game of the season. Watch out for the Crusaders.

Midseason 50

We’re just about at the midway point of the regular season. Here are 50 random thoughts and predictions, yes 50 (I got a little ambitious) about girls’ basketball from around the state…

1. Despite the rumors, Sadie Edwards will not play basketball in Connecticut this year.

2. Bria Holmes needs some help or she won’t be able to lead the Academics to a fourth straight state title.

3. The FCIAC is overrated. Danbury (simply because it has Casey Smith) is the only team from the conference that has a shot making a deep run in the state tournament.

4. Lauralton Hall has the deepest team in the state.

5. Tim Kohs will find a way to win, no matter what players he has.

6. Coginchaug should win the Shoreline Conference title again, but don’t be surprised if Hyde challenges the Blue Devils.

7. It’s a down year for the ECC.

8. Holy Cross may be able to sit Bri Bradford the rest of the season and still win a NVL championship.

9. Sure, Kiah Gillespie and Dejane (Snoop) James fans may disagree, but Career’s Alyssa Alston is the best freshman in the state.

10. Don’t sleep on Platt Tech. The Panthers are not a typical tech school.

11. Lyman Hall is not that bad. But they have a brutal schedule and may not win a game this season.

12. Manchester is the best team in the state.

13. Top to bottom, SCC Quinnipiac is the strongest division in the state.

14. Hard to believe Guilford, Foran and Seymour may not make the state tournament this season.

15. Sarah Veilleux is all by herself at RHAM.

16. Kim Legen is a very, very hard worker.

17. Better chance of picking out of a hat than trying to predict which team will win the SCC Housy.

18. It’s nice to see East Haven playing well.

19. Kolbe Cathedral is no longer a state powerhouse.

20. With the loss of Sarah Royals, Caycee Williams to Torrington may be the biggest addition to a team than any other.

21. Most notable win so far? E.O. Smith over Manchester 52-40.

22. Ashley Perez is the best pure scorer in Connecticut.

23. Windsor is better than expected.

24. Wilbur Cross struggling is not a surprise. But like this?

25. No one has a tougher schedule in the second half than Weaver.

26. Depending on seeding, Tolland and Weaver will play for a Class M title.

27. Wolcott (9-1) has been a nice surprise.

28. Carly Fabbri’s knee is just fine.

29. Sacred Heart Academy is fun to watch and Shyla Osmond is a tremendous point guard.

30. West Haven’s Jayva Johnson is likely the SCCs most improved player.

31. Newtown’s Jess Lynch is a lockdown defender.

32. Newtown at Lauralton Hall, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Mark it down.

33. Ansonia will only go as far as Melissa Tirella and Tierney Lawlor will take it.

34. The same goes for Mackenzie Griffin and Trinity Catholic.

35. Platt misses Damika Martinez a lot.

36. Wow, Class LL is loaded.

37. Bria Holmes and Ashley Perez are the frontrunners for state player of the year.

38. What if E.O. Smith was in Class LL?

39. Sacred Heart Academy and Coginchaug would be a very exciting matchup.

40. Imagine if Morgan Rams was still at Career?

41. The race to a Berkshire League title will be an exciting one.

42. It’s crazy to think how far Hamden center Geraldine Cherubin has come along.

43. Amanda Forcucci has to be happy she made the move from Hopkins (0-7) to Lauralton Hall (7-1).

44. Have two freshmen ever made as much of an impact on one team as Kiah Gillespie and Dejane James have?

45. With the departure of Amber Bepko and Sadie Edwards, Maria Weselyj has really emerged.

46. The SCC went 6-15 against non-conference opponents during the week before the new year. Perhaps the SCC isn’t as strong as usual?

47. Hand senior Kelsey Cuddy can fill up a stat sheet.

48. Northwest Catholic will upset someone in the Class L tournament.

49. Hamden Hall guard Rachel Plotke (35 3-pointers) can shoot.

50. State championship predictions? LL: Manchester, L: E.O. Smith, M: Weaver, S: Capital Prep
