Career's Tanaya Atkinson dominates
#ctgb – It’s too hot outside and it was pretty hot inside the Wilbur Cross gymnasium in the New Haven Parks and Recreation Summer League, thanks to the sweltering sharp shooting of Career’s Tanaya Atkinson. Here’s a look at what went down Thursday in the NHP & R basketball league.
Career 51, Hamden Hall 9
SCOUTING REPORT – As one can gather from the score, Career did whatever it wanted. The Panthers’ ball pressure and traps forced turnovers that led to easy buckets on the break. Career was better off the dribble and from the perimeter. On some occasions, the closest Hamden Hall got to the basket was just past the timeline. Career also exhibited some solid passing in the halfcourt. Tanaya Atkinson finished with a game-high 21.
Mercy 52, Sacred Heart 32
SCOUTING REPORT – Mercy started the game off very well. Sacred Heart wasn’t aggressive on the glass and didn’t look inside enough. Mercy got the benefit of some whistles but, I would’ve liked to see Sacred Heart look in the post more often and make better passes into the post. Mercy was aggressive and took it right at Sacred Heart. It was apparent that Mercy wanted to force Sacred Heart to play defense and foul. Mercy can still drain the long ball. The game turned into a foul fest late. Cassandra Santoro finished with a game-high 20.
Law 34, East Haven 29
SCOUTING REPORT – East Haven features some solid perimeter shooters. Law’s passing game was inconsistent. At times it was pretty, other times it was sloppy. East Haven put together a rally late, thanks to good outside shooting. Players on both teams failed to utilize the pull-up jumper on the break, too many charging fouls on both ends. Laura Dulin led the game with 16.
Other scores
Hand 24, Branford 20
Guilford 24, Amity 18
Random things I noticed…
Why don’t all the teams wear their team colors? Law in orange? … Too often I saw girls dribbling with their heads down. This is what contributes to all of the jump balls that can really kill the pace and excitement of a game. … I don’t recall seeing one pump fake under the basket. Too many forced bunnies led to some wild looking shots from close range… Pretty much everyone did a fine job moving the ball in the halfcourt. … Can we play these games with a shot clock? (Can’t blame me for trying! Lol).
