COURT VISION: Lauralton Hall's Emma McCarthy steals the victory

The first night of hoops is in the books, Emma McCarthy and Tanaya Atkinson kept their hands in the cookie jar, Trayneice Mims kept her hand hot and Amity kept Sacred Heart Academy off the scoreboard. For the very first time with the New Haven Register, here’s what caught my eye.

STEAL AWAY: No. 8 Lauralton Hall’s Emma McCarthy had an unusual triple double against Newtown on Wednesday night. She had 13 points (that’s pretty normal), 10 rebounds (nothing out of the ordinary about that) and 10 steals (Ooooooh, that’s the unusual part). The Crusaders topped the Nighthawks 55-38. Olivia Levey had herself a game, grabbing 18 rebounds for LH (1-0) in the win over Newtown (0-1).
SHUT DOWN: Sharp shooting Sacred Heart Academy had a rough opening, thanks to some good Amity team defense. The Spartans held the Pacers to just six fourth quarter points in a 41-31 victory. Amity also got a game-high 16 points out of Chloe Brinton.
STILL GOOD: Coginchaug lost a bit from last season’s team. However, they still knocked off a good Kolbe-Cathedral squad 69-62. K-C’s Jasmyne Fogle dropped 29, but Coginchaug was led by Kimberly Romanoff’s 22 points in the victory.
WATCH OUT FOR: Foran’s freshman center Taylor Ceballos. Check out this stat line against No. 1 Career: Ceballos had a team-high 25 points and 14 boards. Foran lost 77-46, but if she can produce like that consistently, this should be a good season for the Lions.
FOUR THE LOVE OF TREY: No. 3 Mercy’s Maria Weselyj is one of the state’s best shooters and she started her season off in style draining four 3-pointers in a 65-35 victory over Shelton. Weselyj had 16 points.

STARTING FIVE: The top five performers from last night.
Emma McCarthy, No. 8 Lauralton Hall: Had a triple-double of 13 points, 10 boards and 10 steals in a 55-38 victory over Newtown.
Trayneice Mims, Hyde: Finished with 24 points, four assists and four steals in a 55-42 victory over Portland.
Taylor Ceballos, Foran: Had a double-double of 25 points and 14 boards in a 77-46 loss to No. 1 Career.
Tanaya Atkinson, No. 1 Career: Had a game-high 26 points, nine rebounds, nine steals and made two 3-pointers in a victory over Foran.
Taylor Mierzejewski, Lyman Hall: Dropped 20 points and had five steals in a 48-35 victory over West Haven.
